Why We Included Tart Cherry Juice in Momentous Elite Sleep
In the pursuit of perfection, you can never stand still. That’s why we’re constantly evaluating all our products to see if there are any ways to improve them. With this iterative approach in mind, we recently relaunched a new and unique version of Momentous Elite Sleep. In this article, we’ll highlight the slumber-promoting benefits of one of the four main ingredients – tart cherry juice.

How Can Tart Cherry Help Me Sleep Better?

Tart cherry is packed full of antioxidants, some of which give it the distinctive deep red color. Over the past few years, an increasing number of trials have tried to isolate the advantages it provides in several areas of recovery, including sleep. For example, four researchers from the Department of Psychiatry at the UR Medicine asked participants suffering from chronic insomnia to take a tart cherry supplement. After daily use for two weeks, their symptoms were reduced and they stayed asleep for longer each night, with fewer and shorter interruptions.[i]

A review published in Nutrients found that four other studies that investigated the impact of tart cherry supplementation on sleep all concluded that it was effective in at least one way. Diving a bit deeper into these previous trials, the authors noted that a noticeable increase in sleep quality was shown after taking tart cherry for just three nights. This improvement could be due to the activity of phytonutrients called anthocyanins that tart cherries contain in abundance.[ii]

Another study conducted at the University of Northumbria in the UK investigated the influence of a tart cherry supplement on various sleep measurements. After taking it for seven evenings, subjects had “significant increases in time in bed, total sleep time and sleep efficiency total with cherry juice supplementation,” the authors wrote.[iii] They also suggested that the reason for participants releasing more melatonin was because cherries contain this sleep-promoting hormone.

One of the same researchers was involved in a different trial that examined the impact of tart cherry juice at the cellular level. After participants took a supplement, the scientists examined their bloodwork and found that their levels of several different types of antioxidants – including phenolics that protect cells against oxidative damage resulting from stress – had increased. If, as the results suggest, tart cherry reduces the impact of stressors, then this could explain one way in which it helps you relax before bedtime. [iv]

What’s Special About CherryPURE?

Once our team of nutritionists, dietitians, and performance experts decided to include tart cherry in the new Momentous Elite Sleep formula, we scoured the planet for the most premium extract available. This search led us to Shoreline Fruit’s CherryPURE® Tart Cherry Powder. Extracted from the skins of Montmorency tart cherries and made to strict quality standards in the US, it is the premier tart cherry choice in the marketplace and the only source backed by two ingredient-specific clinical studies. Free of artificial colors, additives, and preservatives, CherryPURE is the purest, most nutritious, and highest-grade tart cherry powder available.

A team of researchers from the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University led both the studies into the efficacy of CherryPURE. They first examined the effects of tart cherry following a lower body resistance training session. The results demonstrated that taking a tart cherry supplement afterward reduced participants’ muscle soreness for up to 48 hours after their workout. Compared to the placebo group, those in the control group also recovered their full strength and power output quicker and had less indication of muscle breakdown (aka catabolism). As such, the authors concluded that the supplement is an effective recovery aid.[v]

The second study sought to explore the effects of tart cherry supplementation on endurance athletes after they’d completed running a half marathon. One group of participants took a rice flour placebo for seven days before the test, on the day itself, and for two days after, while another took CherryPURE for the same duration. After assessing bloodwork and various other post-performance tests, the researchers concluded that the tart cherry supplement “attenuated markers of muscle catabolism, reduced immune and inflammatory stress, better maintained redox balance, and increased performance in aerobically trained individuals.”[vi]

Which Other Ingredients Are Included in Momentous Elite Sleep?

In addition to including CherryPURE, we also incorporated three other evidence-backed ingredients in our unique Momentous Elite Sleep formula. Melatonin is the most widely researched sleep aid and has been shown to speed sleep onset and restore your sleep-wake cycle if it has been disrupted by a hectic schedule.L-theanine is a potent phytochemical found in green and black tea that encourages relaxation and reduces nighttime anxiety.

Valerian root induces a calming effect on the central nervous system and has been shown to increase sleep quality. Combining these with a clinically effective dose of tart cherry extract (200 mg per serving) in the upgraded Momentous Elite Sleep formula provides you with a safe, effective, and non-habit-forming way to get a good night’s rest more often.
