PR Lotion Athletes Head To IRONMAN World Championships

This Saturday, 2,000 top triathletes will line up in Kona for the 40th edition of the IRONMAN World Championships and face some of the most inhospitable terrain they come across all year. A 2.4-mile open water swim, 112-mile bike where winds can reach over 40 mph, and a 26.2 mile run with temperatures typically in the 90s will test each and every competitor.

With multiple PR Lotion athletes coming into the race with an eye on a podium performance, we’re obviously very excited about the number and quality of competitors that will be using, and in many cases, re-applying PR Lotion throughout the day. We continue to learn a ton about how athletes are using PR Lotion in events such as IRONMAN, where we’ve seen some re-apply at each transition area, while others opt for multiple applications pre-race.

Aside from the racing itself, the week of Kona IRONMAN has turned into an industry event, where most brands catering to multi-sport athletes are present. We’ll be back for the second year in a row, where we’ll have a showroom at Kona Coffee to introduce new athletes to PR Lotion. We’re also going to be busy with a number of adventures of our own on the Big Island...more on that later.

Here’s a look at a handful of the PR Lotion athletes that will be competing in Kona.

Matt Russell

The very fact that Matt will be competing in Kona this year defies all odds. It was during last year’s event that Matt suffered a horrific accident on the bike during a collision with a vehicle on course. This year has been a comeback season, which has proven to Matt and everyone else that he’s back on his game and lingering injuries sustained a year ago are not going to keep him down. Matt was 12th in 2016 and has the opportunity to better that finish this year, but regardless of the result, crossing the finish line is going to be an emotional and physical victory in itself.

Cameron Wurf

In his very first IRONMAN World Championships as a professional last year, Cameron scorched the 112-mile bike course in 4 hours, 12 minutes and set what will likely be an untouchable record for years to come. Although Cameron wasn’t exactly a known quantity in the sport of triathlon at the time, his background as an Olympian in rowing and decade spent as a professional cyclist, made result almost expected by those around him. This year, Cameron has his sights set on the podium and after a season of strong results, we expect to see the Australian accomplish his goal.

Brent McMahon

Coming off a huge home win in IRONMAN Canada this summer, Brent is poised to challenge the very best out on course from the swim all the way through the run. Not only has the Canadian’s season come together perfectly, he’s also spent the past couple of weeks in Kona acclimatizing to the heat and humidity that is sure to be a factor on race day. The two-time Olympian has a remarkable list of victories, which include Xterra Champion, IRONMAN 70.3 Champion, in addition to IRONMAN Champion. Adding the IRONMAN World Championship title to that list is the objective on October 13th.

Craig Taylor

Craig comes into Kona as one of the top age group athletes this year after a breakthrough win in his age group at IRONMAN North American Championships. It was during that event that Craig perfected his mid-race re-application process with the help of volunteers in the transition areas. He had this to say about his method. “When I got off the bike in transition 2 I had the volunteers help lather me up with a packet on each leg before starting the run. These few extra seconds taken in transition 2 to ensure I had some fresh PR Lotion were well worth it as I was able to go out at set a new run PR of 2:58:03.”

Betty Squad

Just like in year’s past, Betty Designs will have a number of their Betty Squad team members out in Kona. Four team members will be racing, while numerous others will be there to help support their fellow racers and enjoy the atmosphere at the biggest triathlon of the year.
